Nitrogen Generator PSA Packages

Nitrogen Generation Package (PSA)

What Is Nitrogen?

Nitrogen is an element in Group 15 of the periodic table, represented by the symbol N₂.
It constitutes 78% of the Earth’s atmosphere, is found in all living cells, and forms essential compounds such as ammonia, amino acids, nitric acid, and cyanides.

Applications of Nitrogen

  • Steel and metallurgical industries

  • Chemical industries

  • Food production, packaging, and preservation

  • Plastics manufacturing

  • Rubber industry (automotive, aviation, etc.)

  • Inerting of flammable gases

  • Protection of reactive chemical substances

How Is Nitrogen Produced?

Nitrogen is produced either in gaseous or liquid form through two main technologies:

  • Membrane Technology – purity up to 99.5%

  • PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) – purity up to 99.999%

PSA Nitrogen Generator (Pressure Swing Adsorption)

In the PSA method, nitrogen is separated and enriched from compressed air using Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) adsorbents. These adsorbents selectively capture oxygen molecules and moisture (water vapor) due to their porous structure. Once the adsorbent becomes saturated, it is regenerated by reducing the pressure.

How Does a Nitrogen Generator Work?

A PSA nitrogen generator consists of a twin-tower adsorption system, each filled with CMS adsorbent, along with a set of valves, air filters, pressure regulators, and pneumatic controls.

Dry, dust-free compressed air enters one of the towers and passes through the CMS bed. Due to the specific pore size of CMS, oxygen and water vapor diffuse more rapidly and are adsorbed, while nitrogen passes through, resulting in an output purity adjustable between 95% and 99.999%, depending on user requirements.

About Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS)

  • Particle size: 1.8 – 2.0 mm

  • Service life: up to 10 years under proper operating conditions

  • Fully regenerable

  • Selectively adsorbs molecules with diameters up to approximately 3 Å

    • Nitrogen molecule size: 3.1 Å → passes through

    • Oxygen molecule size: 2.9 Å → adsorbed by CMS pores (~3 Å)
